Live Oak Public Libraries is a system of 16 libraries and one bookmobile providing programs and services in Chatham, Effingham, & Liberty Counties. Their commitment to arts and education in the community is second only to their commitment to creating the highest quality ice cream possible in a fun, family environment. Stratton and his wife Mary own and operate Leopold's today. Peter, Basil and George passed their tradition of making super premium ice cream in the shop, one batch at a time down to Peter's youngest son, Stratton. Leopold's Ice Cream was founded in Savannah, Georgia in 1919 by three brothers from Greece. Stratton and Mary Leopold, longtime advocates of literacy and fostering creative energy in our youth, have hosted the annual competition, in conjunction with the Live Oak Public Libraries, since 2011. Leopold's Ice Cream and Live Oak Public Libraries asked students in Chatham, Liberty and Effingham counties to submit poems on the theme, 100 Years of Leopold's Ice Cream. March 14 at the Savannah City Council meeting in Council chambers. ![]() Send typed or handwritten submissions, postmarked by Sept.The 12 winners and finalists of the ninth annual Leopold’s Ice Cream Creative Writing Challenge have been invited to read their poems at 2 p.m. Label your submission: poetry, non-fiction, OR fiction Poetry: up to two poems, 32 lines maximum each Submission Guidelines (entries that do not meet these guidelines will not be read): *** This challenge is open ONLY to writers who are currently in prison. Outstanding work submitted to the challenge will garner cash awards, and a curated selection of works will be read publicly at the Poetry Center in the fall and published on the Poetry Center blog. What does it take for incarcerated people to survive prison and hope for the future? What strengths, spirit & optimism are required? How do people in prison build community inside, maintain their own dignity, overcome obstacles & bounce back, or plan for life inside or after incarceration? How do incarcerated people celebrate themselves?Įntries will be judged by Free Time volunteers and notable writers whose work intersects with the carceral system and/or criminal justice reform. This year's theme is Resilience: Today & Tomorrow. In partnership with Art for Justice, PEN America, and the Free Time: Building Community for Incarcerated Writers monthly workshop, the Poetry Center invites writers who are incarcerated across the country to submit poetry or prose (fiction or nonfiction) to our second annual writing challenge for people in prison. ![]()
